The Nauvoo Flooding, is not as bad as you hear on the news
Citizens of Nauvoo have come together and sandbagged the Nauvoo House as it is built low and on the river. The river is now some 15 feet higher in Nauvoo due to the Keokuk Dam which was not in place when the Latter Day Saints settled Commerce and applied for a charter and renamed the City Nauvoo. The road at the end of Parley Street has water and the old Stage for Sunset by the Mississippi, which is no longer in use, has flooded. The bridges across the river are operational but have been closed during the flooding. We have actually seen river levels go down over the past few days. It is devastating that a break in the levee flooded some 8000 acres of ground in Illinois, but it probably saved more towns. Niota, which flooded in 93, is still dry.

I have never had an occasion to ask a person next to me what religion they are so I do not know how many other groups worker together on many sandbagging projects in the area. I am just proud to have such great friends and know so many good people in this American Heartland town. Come and see for yourself why so many love calling Nauvoo HOME!

I just like to remind myself and anyone else listening that it is all of us working together that will make the biggest difference and impact on people and their lives. Yes, Nauvoo survives on Tourism and we love to have people come, so I wanted to get the record a little more clear that we are not floating away and things are OK. Things will be better when the water recedes. I like the fact that people work together in crises like this. Many different groups have put in resources, and certainly the expansive humanitarian efforts of the LDS church do get noticed. The local Illinois Peoria Mission called in many missionaries and others to help with sandbagging. I believe that people do not do it for recognition, but because they care. That is true of all of the locals who have helped to sand bag, have brought food to workers, or have helped to move people's valuables and precious items to higher ground. It truly is a great place to live and work.
