Nauvoo Blog
David Miller is a resident of Carthage, Illinois and works in Nauvoo. In addition to managing the Nauvoo Villas "The Condos," he has served in many capacities with the Boy Scouts of America, the Nauvoo Beautification Committee, Biz Link - Linking Hancock County Businesses, and the Nauvoo Chamber of Commerce. At the Chamber of Commerce, he served 1 year on the Executive Committee, 3 years as President, and is now serving a 2-year term as Past President on the Board of Directors. David, an Idaho native, is proud to have (as one long-time community resident once said) "sunk some deep roots in Nauvoo." David believes strongly that Nauvoo, Carthage, and Hancock County all offer the best home for him his wife and his five children, and he works hard to share his love of Nauvoo with its residents, guests, and friends.

Come to Nauvoo and you'll see why it has been said, "This is the loveliest place and the best people under the heavens." It was true when it was said, and it is still true over 100 years later.

Spring is coming to Nauvoo, are you?
Written by David Miller
Saturday, 15 March 2008
Spring is officially still a few days away, but Nauvoo is already enjoying some great weather! Nauvoo undergoes an amazing transformation each fall and each spring. Fall sends us the many colors from the leaves as they go away for the winter.  The ground is so thick with leaves at the end of Autumn it gives the appearance of a carpet under the trees.  Spring brings the rebirth of another year.  My Magnolia tree each year goes through a transition of buds giving way to a warm day and then in full retreat as the temps fluctuate between day time highs that can be in the 60's as they are today and the 40's as they are forecast to be for the next few days.  Once the overnight temperatures finally maintain a high average in the low 40's and high 30's Fahrenheit, the landscape will begin a drastic and fast change from the starkness of winter to the full beauty of the trees and flowers and all that makes Nauvoo and life in the Midwest such a wonderful experience.

If you are ready for a get-a-way, Spring is definitely the time to come to Nauvoo.  Summer is beautiful and the Pageant in July is fantastic, but in the spring you have the opportunity to see Nauvoo as the Mormon pioneers who lived here saw it. Many different immigrants groups have played a role on Nauvoo, forever leaving their own unique imprint on Nauvoo's future. So take a break from the everyday cares of the world, invigorate the soul, and come visit Nauvoo this spring.

2008 promises to be another great year in Nauvoo, and everyone deserves to have a great Nauvoo experience.  To do so, you'll need a great Nauvoo hotel. So don't just come to Nauvoo; Come Home in Nauvoo and stay with us at Nauvoo Villas.

Burlington Air Service closer to Nauvoo.
Written by David Miller
Thursday, 13 March 2008
As some of you may be aware Nauvoo and the Southeast Iowa Regional Airport in Burlington, Iowa have been working together for sometime on a project to make air service more convenient for the thousands of people who come to Nauvoo each year.  Great Lakes Air now offers daily service from the Kansas City and St Louis airports and has been working on connecting flights from Salt Lake City International.  This service would bring customers within a short 20 minute drive away from Nauvoo.  While the process has been slow it is still moving forward and we are very optimistic that we will see this project come to fruition as early as this year.  Until agreements are worked out between the carriers, guests wishing to fly into Burlington rather than St. Louis should book directly with Great Lakes Air

Truer words were never spoken than "This is the loveliest place and the best people under the heavens."  Those words were true in 1844 and are still true today.  You will find Nauvoo to be one of the loveliest places and will want to bring your family and friends and build memories that will be cherished for generations.  When you come to this lovely place you will want a great place to stay.  Everyone deserves to have a great Nauvoo experience.  To do so, you'll need a great Nauvoo hotel. So don't just come to Nauvoo; Come Home in Nauvoo, and stay with us at Nauvoo Villas.

Eagles in Nauvoo
Written by David Miller
Friday, 15 February 2008
Winter has settled in on this corner of Illinois.  Winter is a time when people get to relax and work at a steady but somewhat slower pace.  It offers a respite for those who are in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the summer time and all of the many visitors who come to Nauvoo, but it also brings out some great bird watching.

Nauvoo is located approximately 12 miles north of the Lock & Dam 19 on the Mississippi River.  That particular Lock creates the Largest open pool of water for feeding the hundreds of Eagles who come to the area in the winter months.   The Great River Scenic Byway (Illinois 96) is home to literally hundreds of Eagle nests.  A leisurely drive South from Nauvoo will yield Eagle sitings around every twist and turn in the road.  With scenic turnouts dotting the road you will never be too far away from your next great picture.  There is such a thrill to watch an Eagle flying high and watching the fish in the river and then at the right moment making a swoop down to the River level and grabbing a fish with its talon.

Nauvoo is full of surprises and beauties for all no matter the season, winter, spring, summer & fall.  There is always something to do in Nauvoo.  This promises to be a great season for Eagles, and everyone deserves to have a great Nauvoo experience.  To do so, you'll need a great Nauvoo hotel. So don't just come to Nauvoo; Come Home in Nauvoo and stay with us at Nauvoo Villas.

Nauvoo Attends ABA

Nauvoo Tourism, Nauvoo Chamber, Illinois Nauvoo Mission and the Nauvoo Pageant have formed a partnership to promote more visitors to the Nauvoo area.  The venture is a cooperative arrangement to promote Nauvoo and all of the wonderful events throughout the year in the Nauvoo area.  Recently David Miller on behalf of the group attended the annual American Bus Association conference in Virginia Beach Virginia.

Upon return from the Bus Association conference Mr. Miller reported to the group, that the event was very successful.  During the week long event delegates have the opportunity to meet one on one with buyers from all across the nation.  Nauvoo was able to request appointments with buyers who would have interest in History, Agriculture, Wine Tours, and Senior groups who are currently coming in and around the area.  The response from the buying delegates was very positive.  We were able to work with a few companies that know of Nauvoo and would like to expand the presence that they have here.  Significant interest was expressed in the annual Halloween Walk sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce in which hundreds of carved pumpkins line the street on the Saturday before Halloween.  The event has grown each year.

We were also able to talk with some buyers who currently have tours that go to the Chicago area and others who go to enjoy the great music shows in Branson, MO.  There was some interest in adding an over night stay in Nauvoo which could be a mystery date on a tour, but is certainly a value added day for the buyers who buy travel and promote tours.

Nauvoo has such a rich history and great future that we feel certain that those who come and see Nauvoo will fall in love with the area and see why these residents so much enjoy calling Nauvoo home.  Nauvoo is a great place and is the very essence of the American Heartland.

Everyone deserves to have a great Nauvoo experience.  To do so, you'll need a great Nauvoo hotel. So don't just come to Nauvoo; Come Home in Nauvoo and stay with us at Nauvoo Villas.

Exodus Memorial February 3-4 2008

Historic Nauvoo, one of the nation's largest restored historic sites, presents an inspiring dramatic, theatrical, and visual production of the struggles and challenges surrounding the Mormon pioneers, forced from their homes to flee to the Mountain West in the winter of 1846. Two Sunday evening programs will be presented in the West Theater of the Historic Nauvoo Visitors' Center at 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on February 3, 2008. This production will feature the hauntingly beautiful music of Rob Gardner's "Saints & Pioneers", which will also include paintings, photographic scenery, and vignettes depicting the Nauvoo Exodus.

On Monday morning, February 4th, at 9:00 a.m., members of the community and out-of-town guests will participate with Historic Nauvoo personnel in a commemorative march down Main and Parley Streets to the Exodus Memorial Kiosk.  Here they will honor those individuals that gave their lives along the pioneer trail.

In the fall and winter of 1845, conflicts led Illinois government officials to advise The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to vacate Nauvoo to avoid a civil war.   Nauvoo, which had been one of the largest cities in Illinois, soon became a beehive of activity to prepare for the mass exodus.  Nearly 3500 wagons were being produced to accommodate the exodus from Nauvoo.   The first wagon crossed the Mississippi River on a flatboat on February 4, 1846.

For more information, contact Vern Whisenant, Historic Nauvoo Public Affairs, (217) 453-2233 extension 115 or visit Historic Nauvoo.

We look forward to seeing you on the evening of Sunday, February 3rd.

This promises to be a great event, and everyone deserves to have a great Nauvoo experience.  To do so, you'll need a great Nauvoo hotel. So don't just come to Nauvoo; Come Home in Nauvoo and stay with us at Nauvoo Villas.

NBA formed in Nauvoo
Written by David Miller
Monday, 10 December 2007
The Nauvoo Betterment Association has been formed and already has several ideas for projects that will make Nauvoo a better place.

Mayor John McCarty announced the Assocation's committees:

  • Betty Martin will head the Finance Committee.
  • Larry Nicholl will work with computer grad students for the City Web Site.
  • Gary and Kathy Schoeni will work as Public Relations.
  • David Miller will serve as the chairman for Benches and Trash Cans.
  • Seth and Jessica Blatter will chair the City Park Master plan.
  • Karen Ihrig will direct the History Buffs and Mulholland Walking tour.
  • Paul McKoon will chair City Hall improvements.
  • Karen Ourth and Marilyn Candido will chair Flowers.

It seems to be a huge task but we plan to start small and work our way up.  Nauvoo is a great place to live and visit and we want to put our best foot forward.  The more we are able to work together on any project it will build bridges to a better community.  Choosing to be positive and work together is the middle American Way of life.  There is hardly a day that goes by that you do not have some opportunity to serve someone else and the great people of Hancock County demonstrate very well that they are up for the challenge.  Community and family are a way of life with deep roots.  We choose to show respect and concern for the simple things in life when we serve others and volunteer.

Everyone deserves a great Nauvoo experience.  You'll need a great Nauvoo hotel. So don't just come to Nauvoo; Come Home in Nauvoo and stay with us at Nauvoo Villas.

Nauvoo Fire Department makes go at Ambulance Service
Written by David Miller
Friday, 07 December 2007
The Nauvoo Fire Department has been working on plans to offer Ambulance service in Nauvoo.  The local Fire Protection District voted to work toward the goal of offering Ambulance service rather than wait for Ambulances to be dispatched from Carthage.  It has taken a while and cooperation from any different groups.  The fund raising effort alone seemed to be a big challenge.  With past donations from the town and visitors, and a last minute matching donation from Nauvoo Restoration Inc., we were able to raise a total of $19, 794.61. With that goal reached only a few more things stood in the path and they would be simple compared to what had already been accomplished.

Nauvoo is a great place to live and visit.  Everyone deserves a great and safe Nauvoo experience.  We are grateful for the men and women who serve Nauvoo and the many visitors to Nauvoo and Hancock County.  When you visit You'll need a great Nauvoo hotel. So don't just come to Nauvoo; Come Home in Nauvoo and stay with us at Nauvoo Villas.

Student Programs
Written by David Miller

Southern Virginia University (SVU) has recently looked at bringing a study program to the Nauvoo area.  After months of research and meetings with city leaders and educators, they have decided that they would like to open a program in Nauvoo at some point in the future.  While they hoped to be able to start a program in Nauvoo much sooner, they have decided that the time is just not right.  Nauvoo looks forward to the day when they will announce the start of higher education programs right here in our own back yard.

Whether you come during the fall colors or during the event filled summer months you'll need a great Nauvoo hotel. So don't just come to Nauvoo; Come Home in Nauvoo and stay with us at Nauvoo Villas.
